Blackburne - Schlechter, Vienna, 1898
The Other Lasker's NotesThe Kaiser's 50th Jubilee Chess Tournament matched twenty top chess masters against each other at Baron Rothschild's Vienna Chess Club. In round seven Joseph Henry Blackburne and Carl Schlechter played the King's Gambit Accepted.
Joseph Henry Blackburne's success in British and international tournaments earned him the nickname "Black Death;" he also popularized the Shilling Gambit, which he used in the many simultaneous and blindfold exhibitions he made a living from. A member of the Viennese chess school, Carl Schlechter's elegant play allowed him to win several international tournaments and draw a World Chess Championship match; he would, however, die of pneumonia and starvation during WWI.
Edward Lasker annotated the game in 1915.
