How to Use a Chess Clock: 3 Blitz Timing Hacks to Win More Games

ChessAnalysisLichess
Blitz chess is a thrilling race against both your opponent and the clock. A single hesitation on the clock can turn a winning position into a loss. Here are three essential tips to help you master your time control on Lichess and convert those extra seconds into victories.

1. Premove Only on Forced Exchanges

Premoves can save crucial time, but use them selectively. Only pre-move when you’re certain an exchange will occur (e.g., your opponent will recapture on d5 after you play c4xd5). This minimises the risk of a catastrophic blunder when your opponent surprises you with an in-between move.

  • Why it helps: You cut out the click/delay on forced trades without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Practice drill: In arenas, focus on spotting safe exchange opportunities and pre-move them consistently.

2. Shift Gears When Under 30 Seconds

It’s easy to get locked into deep calculation, but when your clock dips below half a minute, prioritise speed over depth. Train yourself to make solid, safe moves in under 3–4 seconds.

  • Clock-check habit: Glance at your clock after every move until it becomes automatic.
  • Safe play: Play bullet-proof moves (e.g., simple developing moves or safe king maneuvers) rather than hunting for the absolute best move when low on time.

3. Enable Default Queen Promotion

Nearly every pawn that reaches the eighth rank becomes a queen. In Lichess settings, turn on “Default Promotion: Queen” to skip the promotion menu and save precious seconds.

  • Settings path: Settings Game Default Promotion.
  • Time saved: Even 0.3 seconds per promotion adds up over multiple games.
