Bishop's Opening and London System: 2 favorite White Openings

Opening
Discussing my favorite openings currently, and why I like them

My favorite opening at present for White is the Bishop's Opening. I like getting the bishops out, like their long range abilities, especially when they're working together. It helps prevent a locked up "bad" bishop, which is nice. I am working on knowing when to play pawn to d4 on the 3rd move, and when not to.

Here is one recent game with Bishop's Opening that I played:

See if you can spot the check mate that I missed on move 18.

Here is a recent game of Bishops Opening, with Caro-Kann defense, and HillBilly Attack.

Thanks to my classmate (my opponent in the game) for helping me find the smothered checkmate in this game. White won while down 10 points in material. Highlights are a rook skewer on move 17 by Black. The Bishops opening in this case did not lead to any early lead, with good play by Black with the C-K defense. However, interestingly, Playing the Be4 move against Caro-Kann is apparently called the "Hillbilly Attack". There is a lot of interesting play with the bishops in the game. On move 22, I started to get the idea to attack g7 with the Queen and Bishop. The plan was to move the Knight to c6, attacking Black's Queen and at the same time revealing a double attack on the g7 pawn by the Queen and Bishop. Black would then have to lose the queen in order to block the checkmate. But black sees through this plan, and blocks the bishop with f6 on move 23. Queen then gives check on e6, which leads finally to the end. We had a perpetual check going between the Knight and Queen alternating check. Fast forward to move 33, where the Queen sacrifices herself, the only way out of check is to capture with the Rook, and finally the Knight goes to f7 for a beautiful smothered mate.

My next favorite White opening is the London System. As a beginner in the tournament and timed chess world, this system helps me get my pieces developed and working together in a constructive manner, and gives good control of the center. I am working on how to respond to more creative responses from Black in this system. Here is a London System game I lost to Black:

One thing to remember is I've learned there is a London System and a London Opening, and I don't know the difference yet.

Have fun playing Chess!
