Chess in the Movies - Queen of Katwe

Today's Movie Review: Queen of Katwe (2016)

I watched this film a few years ago and was blown away by the storyline. If you have not seen it, I would highly recommend it as a film that both young and old could enjoy. Check out the trailer below for highlighted scenes.

Queen of Katwe - Official Trailer

This movie documents the life of female chess player Phiona Mutesi, from Uganda. Without giving too much away, what I love about the film is the overwhelming odds the lead character faces. I am always intrigued by movies based on true stories because I enjoy seeing how amazing things can happen in real life. This movie does not disappoint in terms of surprise factors!

It is an interesting watch because the story takes place in a setting not typically associated with great chess players. I think part of what makes a movie great is when you can root for the underdog. There were several moments that had me on the edge of my seat!

Another thing that is uncommon is the telling of a woman's chess journey. Very few stories about women chess players have made it to the big screen. Obviously, as a female player, I am happy to see examples of women doing well in the sport.

Finally, what I loved about this film was the contrast between where Phiona started out in life and where Chess was able to take her. It was truly a joy to watch this film. If you watch it, please leave a comment in the discussion.

Have a great day!
Cheers!
