Why do we love this game?

How to explain this unique relationship to non-chess players

Perhaps this is unique to me, but among my close friends I am the only one so excited about chess that I play every day. Those closest to me can't understand the obsession. I have heard many remarks like, "What's the big deal? How is chess any more special than checkers?" or " It's just a game, not a real sport." Just typing these words sends pangs to my heart. :-) It is not so much that I strongly disagree with these comments, but it is just that my closest friends will never truly understand my favorite hobby.

So how do we explain the thrill of the game to non-players? It seems like we are in need of a clever analogy. I was thinking of comparing chess to other hobbies like running or painting or playing a musical instrument. I can easily make the connection between training plus practice and the thrill of improvement in the hobby of choice. These ideas don't seem to paint the whole picture though. I think there is a very unique style of brain engagement while playing chess... one that keeps us coming back for more.

For me, with my personality, a big draw to the game is to be able to socialize with the local players near me. It is an easy way to engage with others without really having to come-up with small talk. I really like the "conversation" that happens on the board.

So now it's your turn. Why do you love the game?
