Sveshnikov - Stockfish goes nuts!
Stockfish thinks he is winning, but he is getting mated!A few years ago I came across something remarkable. While investigating the Sveshnikov I suddenly discovered a line where Black won a correspondence game (ICCF). Winning in correspondence chess is very unique, but winning in correspondence chess as Black is almost unseen at the highest level. Of course, the Black win drew my attention, so I opened it. To my surprise Stockfish was giving an advantage for White in the position where I opened it. I went through the game. White was playing all the moves my Stockfish was giving. At somepoint White's advantage started to become beyond the extreme.
A peculiar incidence
To be honest, at this point I thought Black might just have won this game for a weird reason. Sometimes correspondence games are won because of a transmission error. For example, Rae1 is played instead of Rfe1. Well, I just went on clicking through the game, although White was already completely winning...
BOOM!!! Suddenly Stockfish changes the evaluation from 'totally winning for White' to 'White is getting mated'! (Yes, you read that correctly.)
Put your engine to the test!
Over the past years engines and hardware have become stronger and stronger, so let's find out if this flaw still exists.
Here is the Sveshnikov position:
You can do multiple tests: different engine, different hardware, long thinking, short thinking.
