The World Chess Championship 2021

This Blog deals with the World Chess Championship 2021, where the current World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen will battle Ian Nepomniachtchi, the winner of the Candidates Tournament 2020/ 2021.

The World Chess Championship has officially begun with an Opening Ceremony, but the first games will be played on the 26th of November, 2021. The biggest Chess event (of 2021) will conclude on the 16th of December, 2021.

Let's hope, that we get to see a amazing and exciting match!

About the Players

Magnus Carlsen was born on November the 30th, 1990 (he is 30 years Old and will turn 31 years Old during the World Chess Championship) and is not only the strongest norwegian Chess player, but also the current World Chess Champion. He became a IM in 2003 and in 2004 he became a Grandmaster. He became World Chess Champion in 2013 through defeating the - then current - Champion Viswanathan Anand and has defended the title against Sergey Karjakin in 2016 and Fabiano Caruana in 2018. Not only is this remarkable, but also the Fact, that Magnus Carlsen did have the highest ELO-Rating with a Rating of 2882. His playing style is often summarized with the phrase: "Magnus squeezes Water out of stone", this means, that Carlsen wins out of seemingly equal positions. Another ability of Carlsen is, that he is a great attacker and an even better positional player - it is often said, that he has an enormous understanding of the Game and is probably the strongest player in the Endgame.

Ian Nepomniachtchi, often just called 'Nepo', was born on July the 14th, 1990 (he is 30 years Old) and the Winner of the Candidates Tournament 2020/ 2021, which was held to decide the Challenger to the World Chess Champion title. He is russian and became an Internationalmaster in 2004 and a GM in 2007. His highest ELO-Rating was a Rating of 2792. His playing style is often depicted as very aggressive and he is an Attacking player, who isn't afraid of sacrificing material. He is also one of a few people, if not currently the only one, in the top 10, that have a positive score against Carlsen in Classical Chess, although some of these games are quite dated.

About the World Chess Championship 2021

The World Chess Championship 2021 is organized by FIDE, which partnered with World Chess and takes place at Dubai Exhibition Centre, (Dubai, United Arab Emirates) as part of the Expo 2020, which holds place during 2021 and 2022 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic, which also delayed the Cnadidates Tournemant 2020/ 2021 in Yekaterinburg and thus also delayed the World Chess Championship. The Motto of the Expo 2020 is:

"Connecting Minds, Creating the Future"

The World Chess Championship is decided by the first person, that reaches 7,5 Points out of 14, because the other participant can't follow up - even if he would win every single Game afterwards.

The time control is Classical, with 120 minutes for the first 40 moves, then 60 minutes for the next 20 moves. For the rest of the game they will be given 15 minutes as well as a 30 second increment starting from move 61.
If necessary, the players will head into a Tie-Break, where they play 4 Rapid games, which has a time control of 25 minutes and a 10 second increment starting from move 1. If it would then be necessary, they would head into Blitz games (5 matches) with 5 minutes and a 3 second increment and at last into a Armageddon game.

The prize pool consists of $2.000.000 US-Dollars, and will be split 60:40 in favor of the winner, if the deciding factor is the Tie-Break, then it will be split 55:45 in favor of the winner. Both players already have $2.000 USD as an advance.

The Match will have a live-coverage on the FIDE YouTube Channel, Chess.com, Chess24 and of course Lichess.org, as well as other websites. The Wikipedia page will also be updated and there is also a Blog and several Forum-posts, as well as Sudies here on Lichess about the World Chess Championship 2021.

While Nepo revealed his team of seconds before/ while the match, Magnus only shared his team of seconds after the match.
