Analyzing Games Based on Opening #8 - Scandinavian Defese

ChessAnalysisOpeningStrategyOver the board
Analyzing super GM games everyday!

In this blog series, I analyze grandmaster chess games based on their openings, exploring the ideas, strategies, critical moments, and mistakes that shaped the game. Each post focuses on a different opening and breaks down how top players handle positions, create attacks, defend under pressure, and convert advantages at the highest level of chess. I write a simple summary of the game of the end too.

Game - 8 : Sokolov, Andrei vs Speelman, Jonathan ( 0-1 )
Event : Madrid Rapid, 1988
This is not a game played by super GM(s) but it is still a fun game with some sacrifices, at the same time being complicated too!

Black instead of capturing on d5 immediately, decided to go with Nf6 and White became greedy, preserving the extra d5 Pawn with c4. Black was ready for this and got two pieces out on the board while White had zero. Black allowed a fork, but the undeveloped pieces and the open King have their consequences.

The King was restricted from castling and the attack started with a brilliant Knight sacrifice by Black. The follow - up move though, leaded to an equal position, with draw in hand. But White missed it and ended up playing passively.

There were no Pawns to help the wide open King. The Rook moved to try and help, but it was too slow and it ended up getting forked and the loss of it, where Black became an exchange and a Pawn up, but the advantage was way beyond that.

Summary :
Black took advantage of White's stubborness, playing well through the complicating positions of forks and sacs. Once the White King was exposed it was easy as cake.
Thank you!
