The Magnus Carlsen Invitational, the 4th event on the Meltwater Champions Chess Tour and the 2nd Major, consists, of 2 stages. During the preliminary stage 16 players play against each other in a round-robin tournament. The top 8 qualify to the knockout stage which consists of 2-day matches. The knockout will consist of 2 daily mini-matches. If the match score is tied 1 to 1 the players will play 2 games of 5+3 to break the tie. If it still tied they will play an Armageddon game with White having 5 minutes to Blacks 4.

The time control is 15 minutes for all moves, with a 10-second increment per move from move 1.
