About me

Hi,

I am Gabor Horvath, a professional chess coach from Hungary with 10+ years coaching experience.

Teaching experience

Unlike most titled players, I consider coaching my profession. I am not a chess player who does some coaching on the side – I am a chess coach who plays some chess on the side.

I have been coaching for more then 15 years. I have been doing it as a full time job since 2018.

Nowadays I specialise in advanced players in the 1200-1900 FIDE rating range who would like to improve a few hundred rating points.

I have had more then 100 students altogether from the following countries:

1. Austria
2. Bangladesh
3. Brazil
4. Canada
5. Denmark
6. England
7. France
8. Germany
9. Hong Kong
10. Hungary
11. Ireland
12. Israel
13. Italy
14. Kuwait
15. Netherlands
16. New Zealand
17. Northern Ireland
18. Norway
19. Saudi-Arabia
20. Singapore
21. Slovenia
22. Spain
23. Sweden
24. Switzerland
25. USA

Other experiences

- Worked as an English teacher in Brazil, Vila Velha for 4 years.
- Environmental protection work in Germany for 1 year. (Mostly bird ringing and nature park maintenance.)
- All kind of crappy customer service jobs in Hungary, England, Ireland, Northern Ireland. (Yes, I am a bit of a globetrotter.)

Best skills

- I have a deep understanding of chess principles and thinking processes. We can make your thinking more structured, which is the foundation of further improvement.
- I am no fanatic, I understand how people can fall off the bandwagon, lose motivation, struggle with consistency. I have been there myself. I can help you with this.

Teaching methodology

I come from Hungary, where coaches use the tried and true methods of the Russian chess school. I have adapted these to suit players in the 1200-1900 rating category.
