About me

Hello!

I am WGM Tatev Abrahamyan from United States.

I am a semi-active player, columnist and a coach.

Playing experience

I learned how to play chess in Armenia when I was 8 years old. I immigrated with my family to United States in 2001. Since then I have been one of the top female players in the country. Some of my achievenemnts:

Member of US Women's Olympiad team from 2008-2022
Silver medal on board 3 in the 2023 World Team Championship
Second place 2025 American Cup
Tied for first place in US Women's Championship 3 times
Pan Am U18 Champion

Teaching experience

I started teaching chess at the American Chess Academy in Glendale, CA about 10 years ago. I was also a student at the academy when I was a junior player. I have taught group lessons for kids of all ages, both at the academy and in after school programs. The strength and age of my private students has varied through the years. I have also taught chess summer camps for kids.

Other experiences

I write a monthly column for Chess Life magazine.
I used to be the social media manager of the Grand Chess Tour.
I have previously done commentary for Saint Louis Chess Club.
I have recently published a Chessable course: www.chessable.com/chess-studies-solve-to-evolve/course/300770/

Best skills

Having played in many high stakes games, I am quite good at helping my students with the psychological aspects of competition. I like to hear not only what my students were thinking before and during the game, but also how they were feeling. Sharing my own experiences openly helps us work through their own issues more openly.

Teaching methodology

My methodology really depends on the student and what they want to get out of the lessons. Some just like weekly chess lessons, so I try to show them exciting games. Some are more competitive, so we focus more on preparation. My main goal is to teach my students how to think about positions correctly and to be more practical during the game.
