About me

Hello!

My name is Spencer Finegold and I'm a 34 year old US Chess National Master.

Playing experience

I played in my first tournament when I was four years old. When I was 11 I stopped playing, but picked up the game again at 17. I started to take chess more seriously then, and about five years later broke NM.

I've beaten IMs in rated classical time controls as well as drawing several GMs. I've beaten all sorts of strong GMs in blitz/bullet including Nakamura.

Teaching experience

I've been a professional chess coach for over 15 years. I've taught every skill level from pure beginner to expert. Private lessons are my most common way to teach, but I have given countless lectures, classes, summer camps, etc. I've taught all ages as well, from 4-86. All-in-all I have given several thousands of hours of chess instruction in my lifetime.

Other experiences

I worked for the CCSCATL. Also, I am a US Chess Local TD. I have done tons of videos for the CCSCATL and streamed with them. I've also streamed and created video content on my own.

Best skills

I have a lot of experience teaching all personality types. I'm very patient and understand how difficult it is to play the game and analyze it properly.

Teaching methodology

I mostly try to analyze my students games, or prepare lessons based around important themes that crop up in those games. We will focus mostly on calculation training. Not as much on openings or endgames. We will strengthen those technical areas as they appear in your games.
