Greetings from Argentina, my name is Matias Halac and I was born in Detroit, USA, but my family moved to Argentina when I was 7 years old.
I am fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese (I also lived in Brazil).
I've been playing chess for most of my life. I started with the basics at age 6 and participated in my first tournament at age 9.
At 48 years old, I have extensive experience in chess, including playing, writing, and teaching.

I rarely play chess OTB since I put competition aside after my university career in journalism.
The last standard tournament I participated in was the 1992 U-18 World Chess Tournament in Duisburg, Germany, after being Argerntina's champion.

I own a chess academy in my city, so I have extensive experience teaching at any level since 20 year ago. I have many IM students, national champions, and even a blind chess champion.

I never stopped studying chess. It's my passion, and I love opening theory. I have written several articles, including one on the Scandinavian defense in collaboration with IM Guillermo Soppe for "New in Chess" and several in Spanish for local newspapers and magazines.
I am writing a book about the Austrian grandmaster Erich Eliskases, who spent his final years in my city, Córdoba, Argentina.

Really love openings and positional chess, and how concepts develop from your opening preparation to middlegame and ending.
I think it is easier to learn from the classics and then move to the super-advanced new chess so influenced by engines.
I always prepare a Lichess.org study and then develop the online classes using both chess platforms and offer full time support and tournament preparation.
