You send messages to your opponent and agree to a day and a time to play with them. Like, you send "Hello, we are playing in ACL this round. I live in a UTC+3 zone. I'm available Wednesday 6 from 10 to 16 UTC, Friday 8 from 18 to 20 UTC, and Sunday all day long" and they do the same.

The time commitment is one match every 2 weeks. 1h for the match itself, 10-15min of scheduling with your opponent in total. Then possibly more depending how you want to be involved in your team: you could discuss strategy with others, make shared prep, train...
