"Are physical basketballs important for players now that they can play BBall games on their iphone?"
Physical chess sets are essential to me. I just ordered yet another one so I can have one physical set for each several-days/move game.
They matter so much that when I joined my current club, I noticed they used a set larger than my old 'player's choice' set. I bought a similar set so my eyes and mind could adjust to seeing the whole board for larger pieces.
Bill
Can you share which one you ordered?

I got a set called "Premier Tournament Chess Pieces" . It's similar to ''best chess set ever".

I still enjoy playing OTB more than playing online. Sometimes it is hard to find an OTB player. Playing here on Lichess is still fun. I'd like to improve my chess-playing ability before I try to enter another tournament in real life.
Back to the topic...I like the feel of wood chess pieces, especially the set I have had since about 2007 or so. It isn't the nicest set, but I wouldn't play with a really expensive set, assuming I could afford one. I also enjoy the camaraderie in OTB chess.

I looked it online and found something that looks similar to a standard Staunton. There might be some variations that I missed. Can you show it here through images?

I don't think they make this exact set anymore. I have tried to find it on the same site for a local friend. I honestly don't remember the name of it. However, i will try to describe it. The white pieces are boxwood and the black are ebony. The king is 4 inches tall. The knights are nicely made--probably not in a classical way. However the detail in the knights makes them my favorite pieces. All pieces have leather pads on the bottoms. I'm not fond of the rooks, as I am afraid I might break them if I drop them by accident. I prefer sturdier rooks in a chess set. Feel free to send me a message if you want to know where I got this set. I don't want to advertise here, in case it's against the rules. Oh, the set was classified as a Staunton-style set--I hope that helps.

Yeah! That Staunton-style is a staple for tournament sets. And, I guess I can see something similar to what you are describing. The only thing I am not able to upload any photo here (tried sharing screenshots for reference).

It's nothing special-- just a standard Staunton set with larger pieces. If anything, the players choice set is a big nonstandard
