How to Create a Study Plan

"We need a planning guide for the scatterbrains and the screwups, like me."

This guy gets me :P

"We need a planning guide for the scatterbrains and the screwups, like me." This guy gets me :P

It's funny. I read Studer's PDF on planning a schedule just last week. He gets a bit more involved than I can handle. A scatterbrain like me isn't going to be filling out post-training reviews after each session or sticking to a specific time each day. My schedule is more like this:

M: puzzles
TU: rapid games + analysis
W: online courses various topics
TH: puzzles
F: rapid Games + analysis
SAT: online courses various topics

If I remember to do an hour of each activity on the correct day. That's a win and I commend myself as the greatest planner ever! ;)

This is a good study, and I would recommend everyone to check this out!

As a more/less 1500 FIDE player, I follow this plan, that was inspired by reading Dan Heisman’s Guide to Chess Improvement :

  • Tactics : minimum 10mn chessable/day of easy/intermediate tactics on my phone (often 20-30mn in real life)
  • Game collection : 1 game / evening in 20-40mn maximum, with a physical chess board (often 3/week in real life)
  • Play : 1 rapid game (15+10)/week, 1 long game/week, play in my club when possible. Analyzing the game is systematic
  • General book on improvement on extra time, ie in bed (= dan heisman’s guide to chess improvement now, that I strongly recommend! and probably ben johnson’s next)
The most difficult part being obviously to manage to find time for long games...
I think it’s a good plan because easily applicable, doesn’t require 3h+ / day, and it’s more or less the same every day (chessable by day and game collection / play in the evening, +/- play the week end). I don’t like complicated plans where you have to check what to do which day.
It doesn’t include topics like endgame/openings but my main weakness by far is tactics so it doesn’t matter for me. I think I’ll incorporate basic endgames when I have the feeling I’m OK with basic tactical patterns.
