“But engineers rely on their tools, and we don't have tools which can solve social problems; we can't easily solve ill-defined problems without first clearly defining them”
But we do have this. There are whole fields of science called behavior science and behavioral engineering

That's a good point; unfortunately, Lichess doesn't employ or consult such a scientist at this time; and even such a scientist might struggle with chess-specific domain knowledge (how ratings work in theory and in practice, how tournament pairings work, etc.)

There are a few of us who straddle.
-here’s a little gem to get those noodles going on how defining the human tools leads to understanding some of the variables available for change.

I'm having a hard time parsing this: 'even while easily refutable misinformation spreads ("Lichess.org uses the Glicko 2 system.")' -- what is the parenthetical? It reads like it is an example of misinformation, but according to the link, Lichess does use the Glicko 2 system.

I've written in Lichess forums many times about this, but if you read Prof. Glickman's definition of "Glicko-2" then the rating system uses obviously does not conform to that definition.

For someone who grew up in the medieval times of mechanical clocks, the comments about time controls without increment being something dirty (like football without yellow and red cards) sound quite funny. Back in the 80's, everything was "+0" as there was no other option. (But personally I consider increments one of the biggest improvements compared to those times.)
BtW, even today, the lowest division of our regional team competitions is played with 40/120+0:60+0 time control instead of the de facto standard of 40/90+30:30+30 used in others. I'm rather curious if it's just innertia or if there are indeed teams still using mechanical clocks.

Oh, the happy times when videos like this (or the early seasons of House of Cards) were an obvious hyperbole...
