Immortal Bishop

Could you explain why the Bishop cannot be captured / how the fish hook tactic works ?

(Especially when the madness starts, but also how that killing tactic keeps on working as they play more and more moves that change what defenses black could try out)

Here is a game, when h4 was played for the first time:

The fish hook relies on sacrifacing a minor miece on the g file, to open the h file. if in this case black decides to take, white kicks out the knight from defending the knight, opens up the rook, and will inevitably transport the queen there aswell threatning checkmate (usually done in one move).

Also its very common, that if black tries to make rook for the king with f6/f5, White can play g6 taking away f7.

You can check out my study on the Anti-Sveshnikov, where, if Black plays natural moves, we can get the same tactic but with a knight.

its also important, that for the tactic to be meaningful, your piece should be useful on that square. there is a famous fishing pole trap, that can be refuted, by simply ignoring the piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dVZMtqxDmLc

Fantastic post! I love to see games like this with genuinely interesting ideas and good storytelling. A league ahead of those sort of 'my first brilliant move - a QUEEN SACRIFICE... because of mate in 1 in every line', haha.
