Partial Credit for half correct Puzzles

Talking about the scoring system behind the training system on Lichess

Introduction

Are you tired of losing plenty of ELO points on Lichess' training section, even when you've correctly solved a portion of the puzzle or made the correct moves in the wrong order? As a passionate chess player and dedicated user of the online platform, I understand the frustration. In this blog post, I will be discussing the importance of rewarding partial credit for correct solutions in the training section and why it would be a beneficial addition to the platform. From providing encouragement to better reflecting the complexity of the puzzles, read on to find out why partial credit is a must-have feature for any serious and also beginner chess player on Lichess.

Basic topic

As an avid chess player, I have spent countless hours honing my skills on the online platform Lichess. One feature that I have found particularly useful is the training section, where players can solve chess puzzles and earn points towards their ELO rating. However, I have noticed that even if I correctly solve a portion of the puzzle or make the correct moves in the wrong order, I still lose many points.

Idea

I understand that the purpose of the training section is to challenge and improve players' abilities, but I believe that rewarding partial credit for correct solutions would be a beneficial addition to the platform. It doesn't seem fair that I loss 20 points if a made four out of five moves right...

I think that a better point system would look at your moves and give you points related to how many moves where correct and how many don't. Moreover, it could even calculate the importance of the correct move and involve this value in the final result.

For example, I would prefer not to lose 20 points because I messed up the king move of this puzzle. I understand that I would have lost the game when I played the wrong move. However, I think it is not necessary to subtract 20 points from my ELOs. In my opinion, it would be better to only lose like five points...

Reason

Motivation

It would provide encouragement for players to continue working on challenging puzzles, even if they are unable to solve them entirely. Instead of being discouraged by losing points for failing to fully complete a puzzle, players would be motivated to keep trying different strategies and approaches in order to earn partial credit.

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that implementing a system of partial credit for correct solutions in the training section of Lichess would be a valuable addition to the platform. It would provide players with more encouragement and motivation to continue working on challenging puzzles, while also better reflecting the complexity of the puzzles.
