Why is Gukesh avoiding the French?

4.Bg5 is also a good try for an advantage, 4...dxe4 5.Nxe4 and either 5...Be7 or 5...Nbd7 are quite solid though. If Black wants to equalize after 4.e5, he should really go for the 8...Qb6 line and be prepared for many dangerous lines.

That's probably a correct take-- the resulting positions after 4. Bg5 are perhaps strategically better for White, but comparatively simple. 4. e5 is probably the better way to go (at least, that's the perception) at the top level. At the level of noobs like me, you can win games by nurturing a small positional advantage, but at the top level there's definitely the need for that "wow factor".

Gukesh is not 1.e4 player, as I argue from the start of the match. Now its clear. 2 nd, every Bb4 in some Ragozin or similar is his ground and Ding excaped it more likely with intention.

"Why is Gukesh avoiding the French?"

Maybe because they are smelly and they have moldy cheese?
